For this site-specific installation I wanted to explore both the dimensions of the m2 gallery, as well as the location around it. Size and surface area are crucial factors when planning my work so working within a 1m2 area presented an interesting brief.

The title ’01:31:54’ (one hour, thirty-one minutes and fifty-four seconds) is a translation of the m2 gallery’s dimensions. The duration relates to the audio time contained in the magnetic tape that makes up the surface of the artwork. The limited duration of the audio contained on the surface undermines the work's inherent production time, just as the machine-made aesthetic is at odds with the steady and meticulous labour used in its production.

As in the rest of my work, this kind of ‘composition’ reduces personal and evocative material such as audio recordings into a mere surface or skin, recording repetitive human labour or mark making.

The artwork’s visual motifs are inspired by the light emitted by the streetlamps on King’s Grove. I walked down this street countless times while living across the road and I was always taken by the fractured orange glow that illuminated my journey home. The dissolving geometric and architectural forms in the piece are also an attempt to capture the changing landscape around the gallery as Peckham goes through a period of intense transformation.
